Zola Lamothe
Zola Lamothe is an educator at heart and change maker by craft. This Indianapolis-based artist centers mission-focused work and is dedicated to making positive change in the community. Zola’s affection for art and zeal for social justice have always been constant in her life but her professional career in the arts is just beginning. Zola’s practice sits at the intersection of art and activism. Personally, it’s a tool for self-liberation. Broadly, Lamothe uses the unique qualities of art to create a culture of curiosity around social justice topics. This allows her audience to not just learn about social justice topics but also interact, discuss, and most importantly care about the issues.
Most notably, this exploration has led to the award of the Power Plant grant from Big Car Collaborative made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation For the Visual Arts for her debut photography project Unveiling a Forgotten Legacy which brings awareness to the Black neighborhoods displaced by the construction of Indiana University Indianapolis, starts conversations around gentrification, and reclaims cultural space. This work has been exhibited at 1000 Words Gallery, The Madam Walker Legacy Center, Aurora Photo Center, and Indiana University Indianapolis.
