The Intersection Between Art and Activism

Meet the Artist

Zola Lamothe is an educator at heart and change maker by craft. This Indianapolis-based artist centers mission-focused work and is dedicated to making positive change in the community. Zola’s affection for art and zeal for social justice have always been constant in her life but her professional career in the arts is just beginning. Zola’s practice sits at the intersection of art and activism. Personally, it’s a tool for self-liberation. Broadly, Lamothe uses the unique qualities of art to create a culture of curiosity around social justice topics. This allows her audience to not just learn about social justice topics but also interact, discuss, and most importantly care about the issues.

Artist Statement

My art practice sits at the intersection of art and activism. Personally, it is a form of self-liberation. Broadly, it is a tool to create a culture of curiosity for people to deeply understand social justice issues. Through set photography, I’m able to resurrect our shared history and teach the community in a relevant, accessible, and impactful way. By experiencing my art, my audience and I journey together to embody the Ghanaian principle of Sankofa. Revisiting the past to inform and better our future, today. This is truth-telling work, and I want viewers to understand the throughlines of our ancestors and our own experiences. My work shows that on the surface much has changed but below we’re still the same. Together we learn that time doesn’t change things, people do
